Digital Detox
Here’s a Digital Detox guide I’ve created from personal experience — filled with 9 methods that have helped me set healthier boundaries with my devices to boost my mood, protect my peace and restore my energy.
1. Turn Off Notifications
Only check your phone when you choose to. Silence all non-essential notifications like social media, news & marketing apps. If you’re waiting for an urgent message, keep alerts on temporarily — then turn them off again.
This is especially helpful for parents and busy professionals who can’t go fully offline, but want to reduce noise.
2. Remove Instagram (and other addictive apps) from your phone
Keep them on your laptop instead.
This reduces compulsive checking, because it’s way less tempting when you have to open your computer to scroll. I regularly delete Instagram from my phone on weekends and between posts to give myself breathing space.
3. Turn Off Your Phone One Day a Week
Inspired by Tiffany Schlain’s 24/6 practice, I shut my phone off on Sundays — or for the whole weekend when possible. I use my landline or laptop for essential communication and spend the rest of the time enjoying freedom from distraction.
Even if you still stream movies, the difference in your mental space is powerful.
4. Use Airplane Mode at Night
Shut down your phone — or at least put it on Airplane or Do Not Disturb — at least two hours before bed.
Instead of scrolling, pick up a book at bed time (remember those?). This simple shift has helped me recover from years of sleep issues.
5. Deactivate (or Delete) Your Accounts Temporarily
Feeling overwhelmed? Step away.
Deactivate Instagram, Facebook, or other addictive apps. You can always come back when you’re ready. For a deeper perspective, read Jaron Lanier’s Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now.
Limiting your availability is self-care.
6. Take a News Fast
Constant news consumption can lower your energetic frequency.
One of my clients calls it a “news diet” and saw real improvements in mood, sleep, and stress by limiting his intake. Being informed is one thing. Being inundated is another.
7. Use the Focus / Do Not Disturb Setting
I set my phone to Do Not Disturb from 9pm–8am every day. Customize yours to mute unnecessary notifications during rest hours while allowing priority contacts through.
8. Start Your Day Before Checking Your Phone
Let your mind wake up gently.
Create rituals: meditate, make a nourishing breakfast, read something inspiring. Logging on can wait. This small act of self-respect changes everything.
9. Set an Auto-Reply (Yes, Really)
An executive producer friend once wrote:
“If it’s urgent, please be patient.”
Let’s normalize not being available all the time. Auto-replies create boundaries — simply and gracefully.
Protect Your Peace. Raise Your Vibration.
You don’t need to be accessible 24/7. Allow yourself the dignity of rest, clarity and presence.
